During a Photofacial, we use intense pulsed light (IPL). IPL therapy is a fast, noninvasive procedure that uses intense pulses of light to treat a broad spectrum of conditions including brown spots, redness and broken capillaries, acne, and excessive hair.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a form of photo rejuvenation which produces high intensity light over a broad spectrum of visible and infrared wavelengths. IPL is the gold standard for treating excessive pigmentation in the skin because it targets the specific chromophores responsible for dark spots. Our favorite IPL treatments include pigmented lesions such as freckles and age spots, and vascular lesions such as redness and broken capillaries. We also use IPL to treat acne using Blue Light IPL, and to treat excessive hair using Laser Hair Removal.
Before the procedure you will be given protective safety shields or glasses, and a cool gel will be applied to the skin for comfort. Broad spectrum pulsed light is transmitted through a continuously cooled crystal applicator, gently placed over the skin to target affected areas precisely.
The discomfort is mild and can be described as a warm sensation as the light is absorbed into your skin. The Average treatment time is 30 minutes, and typically, more than one treatment will be necessary. We recommend 3 treatments done 4 weeks apart for optimal results.
We call this a “lunchtime procedure” because most patients return to work the same day. You can expect mild redness after the procedure for about 24 hours. The spots temporarily get darker like coffee grinds, rise to the surface, and fade away in 1-2 weeks. Some patients experience peeling and/or scabbing.
